A CT clamp (Current Transformer clamp) for an EV charger is a safety device that monitors the total electrical load in a home. It measures the electricity flowing through the main power cable, and if the load gets close to the home’s maximum capacity, the EV charger automatically reduces its charging rate to prevent the main fuse from blowing. This allows for safe charging and enables “load balancing” by adjusting the charger’s output to match the home’s available power.
How it Works:
- Installation: The CT clamp is attached to the main power cable entering your home, often directly after the electricity meter.
- Measurement: It detects the total current being used by the home at any given moment.
- Communication: The clamp sends this information to the EV charger.
- Adjustment: If the total home load approaches the maximum limit, the charger will reduce its output.
- Balance: When other appliances in the home are switched off and the total load decreases, the CT clamp signals the charger to increase its rate again, optimizing the charge.
Why it’s Important:
- Prevents Overloads: It stops the charger from drawing too much power, which could blow the main household fuse.
- Load Balancing: It enables dynamic adjustments to the charging speed, ensuring that the home’s electrical system is not overloaded while still providing the fastest possible charge.
- Solar Integration: It allows the charger to prioritize and use excess solar power for charging, reducing reliance on the grid.
- Safety: It helps maintain the safe operation of the electrical system by constantly monitoring current levels.
